The youngest learners are already writers – It’s just that they aren’t scribing it yet. A child must learn to think like an author before we can expect them to write like one! This includes the collection of textual evidence even when they’re six years old!
Visualize passing out a myriad of pictures of farm animals, and telling students a story about living on a farm. As you’re reading, if they hear their animal’s name, they hold up their animal!! This is the start of reading comprehension.
Now imagine placing various pictures of farm animals around the room along with pictures of animals that do not belong on a farm. Then, share this thesis statement with students, and ask them to collect evidence (pictures) that support the statement, “Farm animals are fun animals.” Watch how quickly students can gather their textual evidence!!!
Couple this with a variety developmentally appropriate activities that teach grammar in such an inviting way that it’s called “Sentence Weather!”
Students of every age can think like an author. It’s our responsibility to provide them with the tools and motivation. FULL CIRCLE LANGUAGE ARTS is the answer when teachers look for guidance in teaching reading, writing, editing and revising.
