Mission Statement: Teachers and students will fall in love with reading through experiencing the 4 Dimensions of Reading Comprehension.
Objective Statement: The 4 Dimensions of Reading Comprehension seminar will provide teachers with activities that teach students how to effectively transfer information from engaging games and activities to comprehending what has been read. This will then be paired with the 4 dimensions of reading questions utilizing all the new STAAR 2.0 question styles. Couple all of this with activities that show students how to transfer what they’ve learned on paper to what needs to happen on the computer on the day of the assessment. This is all possible through continued use of the hands-on strategies throughout the school year.
Materials: Teachers do not need any items in order to be successful in the inservice. All materials and manipulatives will be provided, including a 100+ page handout and several take-away manipulatives.
Abstract Overview: To truly understand what is read, let’s begin with the end in mind. Let’s take an in-depth look at the 4 types of reading comprehension questions. Upon dissecting them, the 4 Dimensions of Reading Comprehension emerge. Think of the 4 Dimensions as Bloom’s Taxonomy meets DoK (Depths of Knowledge). Understanding these dimensions helps students look for textual evidence (Tapping) and opportunities to inference (Thinking). All of this together leads to reading comprehension that is designed to be fun and long-lasting. Sprinkle in a wide variety of activities, games, and chants, and a recipe for success has been made for students of all learning styles.
Expected Outcome: Teachers will leave with a tangible understanding of how to teach the 4 Dimensions of Reading Comprehension through hands-on activities. Teachers will experience the full circle beginning with the TEKS and then ending with the TEKS within their reading classrooms.
